Is there an instruction that would enable me to translate long, variable length fields? Similar to TR, but that would enable me to work with fields 1-8k in length.

Did you try TRE? It allows you to specify arbitrary lengths, and if all the bytes aren't translated it sets CC=3 and you branch back to the instruction.

It is explained in the Principles of Operation manual which can be found here(Right click on the link and choose save Link As..)

The instruction is explained in Chapter 7-342. or search the manual for "TRANSLATE EXTENDED"
