After 35 years, I thought I had a handle on EBCDIC codes. Today, someone asked "what's a Hex 41?"
Looking at my green card, I located the code with a description of "Required Space". Now, we all know that a SPACE is x'40' EBCDIC, and X'41' in ASCII is the character 'A', but does anyone know the origin of the "Required Space" (RSP) charcter code and what it was used for? |

In almost as many years I have never come across any use of x'41' but is explained by Wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EBCDIC
41 is no-break space (RSP: "Required Space"), E1 is numeric space (NSP: "Numeric Space"), and CA is soft hyphen.
The no-break space is further explained
