I received an email overnight from someone named MCMILLAN announcing a new Help site.
#1 I wonder if this is the same MCMILLAN we had here a few weeks ago.
#2 I wonder if this is the big surprise he mentioned.
Anyone else get the email? I have not looked at the site yet. |

I got the e-mail. It was addressed to quite a few people from help boards. Oddly enough, the site seems to be non-functional (I saw it once - it seemed to be in flux for a while, and now it can't be reached) - not a good recommendation. _________________ Frank Yaeger - DFSORT Development Team (IBM)

I got the email, too. My 'Blocked Senders' list has grown by one. _________________ The day you stop learning the dinosaur becomes extinct |

I got two more emails today. I checked the site over a little bit, and I'm unimpressed.

I got 3 mails from him in the last 3 days. His' seems to be a classic example of how NOT to design a website. |

I got the email, went there and have to admit that I quite like the site, and had no problems. As far as the website design, it's better than I could do, not that it's really saying anything other than I don't feel I have any right to knock it. I quite like the idea of limiting replies, however the content is very limited currently. It's number 3 of the 3 such sites that I frequent, and no I'm not going to get into which is # 1 and which is # 2. I would dispute it being the 2nd site, as was claimed somewhere (I think the email that was sent). _________________ Regards,

Actually, I found the site rather insulting. Sure, there are sometimes wrong answers on these boards, but I doubt that his vaunted 'experts' will do any better, especially since these existing boards and other venues are frequented by many of the people from IBM, FDR, Serena, the hoards of companies consumed by CA and others who wrote the code that is so frequently discussed. And the wrong answers are almost always the result of ambiguous questions and they usually get corrected or advice is given where to search for the right answer (if the original inquirer shows enough interest to update the thread). The attitude on McMillan's board appears to be "We know you are stupid, and that anyone else you ask is as dumb as you are, but send us your doubts and we'll get back to you." Hmmm. I won't.
On the other hand, if it keeps the few last bastions of interesting mainframe discussion from being polluted with questions like "where do I find JCL to invoke the assembler" or "can I read a report file in COBOL", then I'm all for it. |

I visited the site and referenced the "RUN TIME ERROR - NEED HELP" thread in the COBOL2 Forum. I was gratified to see that the replies from Mcmillan were as garbled as the Questions. |
