Confused I have been assigned to develope a process that would pull information from the syslog, such as: jobname, start time, endtime, time job hits the output queue and the time job starts to print. I will then create a report or file that can be viewded from the intranet. The syslog information will be pulled across lpars. Not all jobs will be included just those that are considered to be critical to our business partners.

There is a choce between SAS,COBOL,REXX and MICROFOCUS. I have been told that SAS is mostly used. I haven't programmed in cobol in 7 years. I have takien training courses in all others except for MICROFOCUS. What do you suggest I use? and Wouldn't I have to use the HASP identfiers in whatever application is decided upon?

Thanks in advance for you help.

I believe SAS has built in SMF functions which will be helpful for this task. I don't think the others have the functionality.

MICROFOCUS is basically just COBOL on a PC with interactive testing and debugging tools built in. Yes, there are lots of other goodies with it, but it's still COBOL on a PC.

Cyndy,
You mentioned SYSLOG. Are you thinking of reading the actual hardcopy log? As CaptBill mentioned, the SMF data may be easier to use. There are probably sample reports in the CBT collection. Go to www.cbttape.org and get free, downloadable samples. CLick on the CBTnnn link and browse the FILE001 directory looking for SAS.
