Hi,

I am currently developing a search tool.

I am facing some problem with the search. I am using LM services and also making use of edit macros to accomplish my task. Rough skeleton as shown below:

LMINIT dataid..
LMopen dataid.
VIEW dataid macro(macro1)
LMclose
LMFree.

The macro1 returns some search results based on the criteria specified in the macro. My problem is that when I execute the rexx code, the dataset gets opened in VIEW mode as per the command. and the results are obtained when I exit from the dataset. Is it possible to mask the dataset to be opened in VIEW mode? I mean can we perform the same task without opening the dataset at all?

Note: I have obtained the results using EXECIO commands; But I am trying out LM services for a performance-enhanced approach.

Please do suggest me to resolve this issue.

I don't think you can run an edit macro against an un-opened dataset. Why can't you end the edit macro with CANCEL?

You can run the VIEW service without the LMINIT/LMOPEN/LMFREE by using the DATASET keyword. But I can't imagine that opening up the editor (which internally opens about 5 DCBs, then opening and searching SYSEXEC and/or SYSPROC and/or ALTLIB'ed data sets, then parsing the macro, running it, shutting down the editor and retrieving your results, possibly through more I/O, would be faster than doing the single I/O that execio would do. It might be faster if you are going to have to allocate lots of members (ALLOC/FREE is expensive) but I doubt it.

Better yet, why not use SuperC? It already has the search capabilities, and can search the whole data set with one set of allocations. You can get output from it in a number of ways or just parse the listing. Or use SORT if your data is formatted in a particular way.

Hi,

I ended the edit macro with Cancel. It worked the exact way I needed.

But it takes some time as semigeezer has indicated.

Can you emphasize on how to use the SuperC search from REXX (Can we use both online and batch versions of Superc?
