				| hi
I need to maintain backups as 10 on disk after which I'll migrate the oldest one to tape. The main problem is how to detect whether 10th version got created or not thru JCL? Can someone help ..

 Thanks

				| 10th version will be abc.def.ghi(-9).
use IDCAMS or SORT to find out.

 give search on "empty"

				| satyapallela, do you want to know if the 10th version or the 10th generation was created?
 Ex:

 10th Version: 'HLQ.MYGDG.G0001V10'
 10th Generation: 'HLQ.MYGDG.G0010V00'

				| ANIL SARATHY,
What happens when you only have 9 versions and you try (-9) you will get an error that the relative generation does not exist and the job will abend.

 Satyapallela,

You need to issue a listcat and parse the output thru sort/rexx and determine the no: of generations from there . check this link. you need to modify it slightly

 Hope this helps...

 Cheers

				| hi all
thanks for ur prompt responses. I've actually zeroed upon a rexx tool to check whether the last version (i.e. 10th in this case) got created or not and there by getting a return code and using in jcl. i would like to know if a similar thing exists in jcl where i can enquire if version(-9) i.e. 10th maximum file one got created or not.

 Thanks
 Satya

 satyapallela,

Please spend time reading my post and also looking at the link provided by me in my prior post. The link provided has a solution using sort utility.
