programmgr, I found the last post absolutely unintelligible with all the abbreviations and shortcuts. This is not instant messaging on a cell phone. Please write your messages out clearly. There is no reason to use lazy abbreviations (y, u, coz, etc.) or to abbreviate sentences in a setting like this. You have plenty of room to type, and your audience will thank you for not making them guess what it is you are trying to (so cutely) say.

(PS, it isn't just you that is doing this. But I mention this because I almost never respond to entries which say to me that that the writer thinks that the time it takes to type 3 or 4 keys is more valuable than the time it takes me to figure out what the @#$% they are talking about, and I know that many others have expressed the same reservations to help in those situations).

I also agree.

What bothers me the most is that the atrocious spelling seems to be done in a somewhat consistent manner, (y, u, u r, coz, thx, etc.) that it almost seems as if these people are being taught in school to spell like that. Do schools and universities no longer require courses in grammar, spelling, punctuation and writing? Does business no longer require employees to be able to read and write in a professional manner?

These abbreviations are common among children and teenagers who (frantically) use instant messaging, and presumably among people who use text messaging on cell phones because of the limited space available for text. Unfortunately, it is a drastic solution that is now being used where there is no problem with space or time (well, there is a new problem of incompressibility, but it is created by the "solution").

Couple of months ago, Bangalore Times (supplement of Times Of India in Bangalore) ran a column about how school students were requesting answers in the exams be allowed to be written in SMS style!! Of course, the teachers were firmly against it!

The realisation would dawn on the students, if Newton's third Law of motion was described thus:

I saw "v" being used for "we" earlier on.

Amazing!
