aswin.s,

In simple terms

AS/400 (Application System/400) is IBM minicomputer series introduced in 1988 that runs under the OS/400 operating system. AS/400 is IBM's midrange computer which is larger than a microcomputer but smaller than a mainframe. IBM RS/6000s are also called midrange computers. Midrange computers are designed to be hosts in multi-user environments.

Mainframe is a large computer that has access to billions of characters of data and is capable of processing large amounts of data very quickly. Capable of serving hundreds to several thousands of users

Hope this helps...

Cheers

My viewpoint:
The AS400 is primarily a database machine and most files are kept on DASD (good for realtime updates). Tapes are mainly used for backups.

The mainframe is better architected for sequential processing, doing massive amounts of I/O and working with tape devices.

Each machine has strengths.
