 There is an numeric intrinsic function in COBOL.
 
 Try this :
 
 move the numeric date field into a variable (WS-DATE)
 
 Compute WS-DAY = Function day-of-integer(WS-DATE).
 
 Note that WS-DATE should have pic 9(8 ) and should be of the format YYYYMMDD.
