|
|
Hi,
Is it possible to FTP an excel file from server location to mainframe? After FTPing will that be a readable format?
Please let me know how to do that in batchmode how to accomplish the following:
1. My job needs to check for the existance of the file in the server . The excel file will be saved in the server with some date tag. So while checking the existance of the file it might be easier to check with the date
2. Job should then check whether the file is empty file or not?
3. If the file is non empty we need to FTP the file to a mainframe dataset.
Please advise me whether we need to convert the file to TXT file before we do the FTP? AS far as my knowledge goes if we FTP the XL file directly to mainframe formatting will be difficult.
Please advise me regarding this.
Thanks |

think about it. What mainframe application do you have that can accept a proprietary Microsoft excell file format? The formating is not difficult, the reading of the format will be due to the >asc(256) value contained in an excell (.xl) file. So yes, you need to convert it (within excell) to a .txt file.
you can FTP, via batch mode with a script on pc or a job on the mainframe, but would suggest the pc script, since it would be easier to 1) do all the checking that you want and 2) is can be triggered easier on the server than on the mainframe.
I would suggest doing a search in this forum (as well as others, including google) to find examples of scripts to accomplish the FTPing. In fact, you could construct the script to include the excell to .txt conversion (invoking an excell macro). _________________ Dick Brenholtz

Dick,
Thanks a lot for your suggestion. I am a mainframe programmer so I am limited to do the programming in Mainframe only.
As per your suggestions I am checking the script for converting the excel to TXT but I need to incorporate everything in mainframe only.
Thanks and Regards,

I'm just glad that M$ hasn't poked it's nose into mainframes ... try saving the excel sheet as a text delimited file and then FTP it.

Nabanita,
How about reading the Excel as a database using a JDBC driver ?
xlsql
xlsql
