Please give a clear explanation on RDW since I am new to SORT.
Sort has got nothing to do with RDW. RDW is part of Variable blocked files which is related to RECFM. RDW stands for Record Descriptor Word which is the Data preceding a variable record that specifies the length of the entire record including the RDW.
Check this link which explains in detail about the RDW

muralikrishnan,
Since you're new to Sort, I'd recommend reading through "z/OS DFSORT: Getting Started". It's an excellent tutorial, with lots of examples, that will show you how to use DFSORT, DFSORT's ICETOOL and DFSORT Symbols. You can access it online, along with all of the other DFSORT books, from:
Note that "VB Data Set Considerations" are covered in various Chapters of "z/OS DFSORT: Getting Started" as appropriate. _________________ Frank Yaeger - DFSORT Development Team (IBM)
