Why would anybody use this, what does it do ?!?!?
I've been programming for over 20 years and have never used it, can't recall ever seeing it before ... it doesn't show as an option on the UNIT parameter in my QWIKREF system ...
However, I've now been asked to tidy up some old JCL and this is all over the place ... can I safely delete it ?!?! |

Thanks for the reply Kolusu, but I've already looked there and it doesn't give an example of the exact line UNIT=ALLOC ...
It tells how to point at a specific UNIT, or to use the same UNIT as a previous file, but I need to know what the exact phrase of UNIT=ALLOC means !!! |

Hi; In the unit parameter you can use anything that IBM has defined as a default (3490 3390 sysallda etc) or what your sysprog has defined as an installation default ( disk, tape) etc . I assume that at some point in the past your sysprog has defined ALLOC as a valid devicename. The easiest way to check is run an IEFBR14 to allocate a dataset on unit alloc and see what happens |

Install the freeware TASID. It will show you the physical devices associated with the generic unit name. |

nevilh - I ran a job that created 6 new files, 3 with UNIT=ALLOC & 3 without any UNIT= statement ... all 6 files were created on 6 different packs ... so I guess that UNIT=ALLOC is, as I suspected but still need to prove, doing nothing !!!
semigeezer - I'll try that now ... |

Try ISMF if you go into the option "VOLUME" you can generate a list based on
"DEVICE TYPE" |

I'm beginning to think I'll just leave these commands in place, superfluous or not !!!
nevilh - I get the response "LIST HAS NO ENTRIES"
kolusu - No such member |
