				| bullfighter,
Make three correct guesses consecutively and you will establish a reputation as an expert. J/k

Being an an expert in any field is a just measure of his/her confidence. Get your basics right and club your analyzing skills to your confidence , then you are an expert.

				| Then I hope I never go to a doctor that is an 'expert'.
Knowing the basics and passing yourself off as a confident 'expert' is just plain dishonest. The term 'con man' comes from the term confidence for exactly this reason.

 A real expert has

 experience
 knowledge of the basics
 knowledge of the smallest details
knowledge of the implications of changes
 experience
 experience
and ... what was that other thing... Oh yeah
 experience

So how do you become an expert? Read, get a mentor, and work with it for a while. Learn the history, the reasons for design decisions of the past, the community, the shortcomings, etc and then, if you understand how all those things and more come together, you can start to call yourself 'expert'.

 Semigeezer,

I guess you mis understood my post. I did not mean pose as an "expert" with just basics and confidence. I read somewhere, that the more a man knows, the more he knows, he doesn't know. So I suppose one definition of an expert would be someone who doesn't admit out loud that he knows enough about a subject to know he doesn't really know how much.

I never claim myself an expert , as I know I will make a mistake . I will try to Learn from the mistake and try never repeat the same mistake

So as you mentioned experience is the keyword.

 Thanks

 Kolusu

				| When I was a young programmer, around 21 years old, I became known as a PL/I expert by sitting nearest to the manual and knowing how to read the index.
That bit's easier these days, now the manuals aren't rationed the way they used to be, but there's still no easy way to get actual experience.

You have to serve your time.

 Good luck, and enjoy it.
