Our shop carries 200 old VSAM clusters that are being used occasionly. so we wanted to release the space on DASD by deleting the clusters , but we just can't do that as we don't have the documentation of the definitions of the VSAM Clusters. so we are planning to go for the following process.

1. Define a new cluster using the the attributes of the existing clusters, without copying the data, giving the space parameters to a minimum.
(Or, if there is a option of extracting the attributes of the definitions from all the clusters and documenting them)
2.Take the back-up of the clusters
3.Know the space Utilization on the clusters
4. Know the number of records each record is carrying
5.Delete the existing clusters
6.Rename the defined clusters in the Step 1 to the original names.
(This step 6 won't be required, if you could extract the definitions and document them for future purpose to rebuild the clusters)
----------------------------------------------
What is achievable for me out of the above 6 steps.

1)I could create new empty clusters using the Model Option keeping the space options to a minimum (One cylinder or track). But I don't know how to extract the definitions by using some JCL/Rexx. Though we can do it with Listcat but that would be time very time consuming considering the 200 Clusetrs.

2) The second one also I could do it using IDCAMS Repro.

3. Third one, I don't know how do it, though I have read couple of links getting the information using HIARBA and HIURBA parameters.
it would be really time consuming if I start calculating the space utilized by using HIARBA and HIURBA for each cluster.

If I have some tool (Any Rexx or JCL) do this task, that would be great.
Any suggestions for this one ?

4. Listcat will provide the answer for this one. But I need to do it for each cluster. Is there way to do it everything(again by using some tool or utility) at one shot ?

5. Deleting the clusters is the most easy step here, In one step we can delete all the clusters.

6. Renaming the clusters, I have a problem here. I was trying to rename a cluster using a ALTER command. I am getting a JEM Error for this one. If any one has used this option and if they have a JCL, could you please post it here ?

We are doing the steps 1,5 and 6 to rebuild the clusters when ever there is a need for it.

Steps 3 and 4 are required for
-----------------
as we wanted to know how much DASD space we have recovered. So we wanted to do the do the step 3.
3.Know the current space Utilization on the clusters, so that we can compare it at the end of the process.
We also wanted to know how many records each file carries. so we wanted to do the 4th Point.
4. Know the number of records each file is carrying
------------------------------------------

Also your opinions to speed up the process to get the requirement is most welcome.
