Hello everyone,

I started my software career as a mainframe professional. After entering this field i liked to continue my career here when my frends were moving on to .net or some other advanced technologies.I know mainframe is a stable field and will exist atleast till i am alive on this earth.I am working with JCL,COBOL&IMS DB.After reading some articles in Web that IMS is dying and only DB2 will exist in future,i am bit worried whether my career will be stagnant if i continue workng with IMS.Is IMS really fading away? Should i consider the option of shifting to DB2.All suggestions are welcome

Thanks

mask-of-zorro,

I wouldn't say IMS is fading away as IBM hasn't stopped developing IMS. But there are less number of shops which are using IMS now. So I would advise you to start leaning and working with DB2 just so to keep you ahead of the cut throat competition. IMHO in IT field you always have to learn something new to keep up. So Start learning DB2. IBM now provides as PC version of DB2 for free. Just download that and start learning. Good Luck

Hope this helps...

Cheers

Even though mainframe systems won't be going away anytime soon, the need to integrate them with other systems is growing. DB2 is simply easier to share with open systems because it's more like Oracle and SQL solutions. As Kolusu points out, there are versions of it which run outside of the mainframe.
