1. Which is easier to learn and implement ?
2. Which will offer more functionalities ?
3. Which will be better in general ?
We need to know this to decide on - what we can use for our organization. _________________ Rasprasad S |

rasprasad,
It is really hard to compare easytrieve with SAS as it depends on the type and business of your shop. SAS has the ability of coding financial calculations which easytrieve does not have. However you can call a cobol pgm to perform financial calculations from easytrieve.
As to report writing, EASYTRIEVE enjoyed some advantage before the advent of PROC REPORT. Now, SAS has become a lot more flexible and powerful.
As for extracting records from a file and matchign files, easytrieve scores over sas
However SAS has it own advantage of reading a flat file as a DB2 Table on which you can write SQL queries.
SAS is a good tool as well as easytrieve. Each has it's own advantages and disadvantages.
Hope this helps...
Cheers

I don't know if Easytrieve can do this, but SAS can directly invoke a REXX exec. |

In the short run, probably Easytrieve. In the long run, probably SAS, as you may struggle trying to get Easytrieve to do things SAS can do quite easily. The syntax of SAS and structure of the programs will seem foreign at first, but it's easy once you master a few key concepts. Also, try doing a Google search on Easytrieve and one on SAS - you will see that there are tremendously more SAS resources on the web than there are for Easytrieve. SAS Institute itself has top notch technical support as well - they have saved me on quite a few occasions. There is also a very active SAS listserv mailing list (SAS-L) that is very instructive to read and is also a great place to get questions answered.

SAS, hands down (depending on what modules you license, but even base SAS has very rich functionality).

In my opinion, SAS, easily. However, the cost may be prohibitive, and lots of of people aren't comfortable with the fact that the programs will stop working if you ever decide not to re-license SAS (including my company, which is threatening to drop SAS for these reasons, much to my chagrin). |
