Hi,

I am taking a back up of VSAM files. I have approximately 1000 files to be backed up by using DUMP command of ADRDSSU program. If I list all the above files in one job, I am sure it may take hours to execute. So I would like to split the files among the different jobs. For that I would like to know Allocated space for each file, so that I can group few small and large files together and run several jobs at a time. That way I don't end up grouping all the large files in one job. Can any one of you help me how to list the allocated space for each VSAM file or by giving the pattern HLQ.MLQ.*

I know from File Aid we can do it for each individual dataset, but I would like to browse the space information for all the datasets with one command or one JCL. Please advice.

Thanks,
Pradeep

Pradeep,

You can find the space allocated in 3.4 itself.

1. Go to 3.4
2. Type HLQ.MLQ.* for the DSname Level and press Enter

this will bring a list of all the datasets matching HLQ.MLQ.*

3.Type SORT TRACKS on the command line and press Enter

This will sort all datasets on tracks. This sort seq is in the descending order i.e the dataset with large allocation will be at the top.

To see the tracks column press PF11(Right). Tracks Column is the first column

1 cylinder = 15 tracks

If you want save this list, just type SAVE any-8-char-name at the command prompt and press Enter.

This will save the listing in

USERID.any-8-char-name.DATASETS

Hope this helps...

Cheers

Kolusu

Thanks Kolusu. I remember seeing the tracks used by each dataset when I pressed PF11. But I didn't know that we can use SORT and SAVE commands in that panel.

You really saved me lot of clerical work. Appreciate your help.
