Posted: Tue Jul 06, 2004 10:36 am Post subject: Best way to copy subset of records |
|
|
I have two very large datasets (on tape carts) from which I wanted to create smaller subsets, say, the first 500 records from each DSN.
I was stumped for a way to do this with IEBGENER, SYNCSORT, or other utilities; I had to write a COBOL program to do it.
I searched the boards, but could not find any messages relating to imposing record-number limits when copying. I did some Google searches and also came up with zilch.
Surely I'm missing something simlple, right? IEBGENER and SYNCSORT have all these great ways to edit the data, move fields around, include/exclude records, get counters, etc. I would think they must have ways to copy just a subset of records.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Doesn't SYNCSORT support a STOPAFT function, either as an input parameter, i.e.:
//SORT EXEC PGM=SORT,PARM='STOPAFT=500'
or as a SORT paramater, i.e.:
SORT FIELDS=COPY,STOPAFT=500 |

And what about an IDCAMS REPRO COUNT?
//IDCAMS EXEC PGM=IDCAMS
//SYSIN DD *
REPRO INFILE(in) OUTFILE(out) COUNT(500) |

Kolusu: I went to the link you provided, but it doesn't appear to be what I was looking for. I'm not really looking to split the DSN, unless I can split it in such a way that the first output DSN is 500 records, and all the rest are ignored. All I really needed was a small subset.
SuperK: STOPAFT is what I was looking for. I don't know why I couldn't find it in my searches before.
After searching the boards for STOPAFT, I found several posts covering this topic, e.g., http://www.mvsforums.com/helpboards/viewtopic.php?t=2095&highlight=stopaft
Of course, If I had remembered the STOPAFT parm in the first place, I wouldn't have needed to do the search (I can hear Joseph Heller laughing in his grave...)
Question: I've seen ICETOOL referenced in many posts, and some of those posts imply that it is the same as SYNCSORT. Are they the same product under different names?

Kolusu,
Sorry, I should have done the search; I tagged that last question almost as an afterthought, since I was already in a post.
As I hoped you've noticed, I normally do try to do the research first, and not to ask redundant questions.
Anyway, I do thank you for all your assistance. I just didn't want you to think I was being lazy posting questions without doing any research first. (Yeah, I'm one of those who actually cares what other people think of him.... *grin*)
