Both are application development tools that are very good for non-programmers to use.

Vision Plus is the product now marketed by Computer Associates, which used to be known as Quikjob when it was marketed by Sterling Software. It is a COBOL-like interpreted language, great for easily producing reports and for manipulating data formats.

SAS is a large suite of data analysis, statistical analysis, and output presentation tools.

VisionPlus is actually a Credit Card package. I believe that it is the new name for the latest version of Cardpac. This is not a CA product.

Sample modules are:-

CMS
ASM (Customer Services management)
CDM (Credit Applications/Credit Scoring)
ITS (Chargeback/InterchangeTracking)
FAS (Authorizations)
TRAMS (Transaction Management)
CTA (Collections)
MBS (Merchant)
SSC (Security)
TRAMS/AG (Code generator)

You won't be finding any manuals for this anywhere on the Internet. However, back in 2000-1, I came across a very detailed brochure put out by the company that owns the product. Couldn't find it now though when I tried to search.

The above modules can themselves consist of hundreds of programs, etc. Hence any job advertised usually asks for a specialist in one module or another.

Cardpac was a simple COBOL CICS system. VisionPlus however (I believe), also has DB2.

Like any big mainframe business package, it has very strict standards. If you are already well versed in Credit Card processing, and also know about the standards used in big international mainframe banking packages, then you might be able to convince an employer to hire you for this (and have him believe that you already have exposure to either Cardpac or VisionPlus), but if you don't, then don't bother trying to bluff. You would be instantly found out that you haven't got a clue about even the basics of Credit Card processing. You should know the full "Card Life Cycle" if you are going to be convincing anyone...

FYI... a few more pieces of interesting trivia about VisionPlus.

Back in 1998-2002, this was a red hot skill to have. This was the time that people were migrating from Cardpac to VisionPlus. You could travel the world in luxury back then if you had this skill. Dozens of countries were desperate for people, and the fact you might have only been able to speak English was irrelevant. You could fly from country to country doing a whole series of six month contracts one after another.

These days however, the skill is pretty ordinary, and so is the pay. The good days are gone.
