Folks,

I have a situation on hand, a sort step is taking 6 hrs to execute, i dont know if it is the best we can get for the situation.

Here are the details -

Sortin dataset1 -> on dasd, used cylinders 618, used extents 16
dataset2 -> on tape, BLKSIZE= 32670, BLKCNT= 101445

sortout -> on tape
SORT FIELDS=(544,9,CH,A,601,5,PD0,A,35,3,CH,A)

the question is 'Is there anything that we need to take into account, when sorting files on tape?'

please let me know if there is anything i can do to improve the situation.

thanks
the enigma

enigma,

What is the under lying process? Is the tape file cycling with periodic data adding to the tape?

Premkumar,
The tape file is created out of a monthly job, but data is not added to the tape. It's just an intermediate file and is on tape because its just too large to be on dasd.
subsequent steps use the tape dataset and finally a report is produced from that dataset. thats all the use for that dataset.

Frank,
SYNCSORT 3.7DR TPF3A

thanx,
the enigma

enigma,

Sorry, I was off on a long weekend and couldn't follow up on this post.

If the records in sortin tape file is already in sorted order, consider sorting the dasd file and merging it with the tape file. This will help you reduce the clock time.
