|

I am looking for a 3270 Emulation that is not too expensive. The IBM Emulation is VERY expensive and besides that there are errors in it too, so why not pay less and get about the same! I know somebody out there is using other emulations. There was a report about a test of ZOC in the MainframeWeekly recently. Anybody using a 3270 emulation that they are happy with and that does not cost a fortune (I have seen emulators that cost $10,000-20,000 for a company license)? |

warp5,
You may want to have look at Vista tn3270.
Single user license costs $30. You'll have check with them for site licence.
They also give a free 30 day trial. |

This is quick overview of my short reviews.
Mocha really looks good for the price, but it does not offer full functions (like file transfer with ind$file), it is also only in English.
Vista really looks good, but it is only available in English - my company is in Germany.
Quick3270 looks good but has some minor problems - a new version is coming out this week.
I will keep you posted. |

warp5,
Would your company be willing to pay to have a German version of Vista? If so, I can call Tom Brennan and see if he is willing to do it.
I can tell you that I don't think much of Quick3270. This company provided it for home use. It is not very friendly. If I get a callout, I try to avoid using it. That means if it is not past 11pm or before 5am here I will drive to the office. Get the idea? |

At the moment I have looked at:
Vista TN 3270 Nice, but only in Englisch
1-9 $30 each (US)
10-19 10% off
20-29 20% off
30-49 30% off
50-99 40% off
100+ 50% off
Ericom PowerTerm Pro $149
Quick327 Small errors that are being corrected
User 30,
100 users 2.000,
Company 3.500,
QWS3270 More than 1 session hung
MochaSoft TN3270 Limited (no file transfer) Company $250
ZOC Company 8.243,75 Euro
Passport 3.2
Reflection 10
I can make no claims of thoroughly testing the products but in a quick review Passport has left the best impression on me thus far. Here is a link:

Thanks Sreejith & All. I needed a Mainframe emulator urgently for my home PC and found the link and its free .
I have downloaded from www.mochasoft.dk and was able to work as normal. Testing most of the common things I generally use and they are working fine.
Once again Thanks MVSForums |

Just a quick note. Personally, I have used Vista for day to day work for probably 10 years (best $30 I ever spent), but I wanted to correct the statement that IBM's (presumably) Personal Communications product has emulation errors. In fact, pcomm, as it is informally referred to, is the only emulation product that strictly adheres to the 3270 protocol as documented. Unfortunately, the 3270 protocol itself and some products that use it have a few idiosyncrasies that, when emulated, appear to be incorrect or odd behaviour. For example, the USSMSG10 screen (I think that is the name) has the print bit set whch causes pcomm to priint an image of the screen by default when a connection is made (this can be overridden, of course). Similarly, there are times when a color specification in BMS maps appear to be ignored by pcomm because of the way CICS or VTAM misuses the documented hierarchy of 3270 attributes. PCOMM is displaying these things correctly (I have tested them on real 3279 hardware as well), but they look buggy. But in fact, as far as I know, PCOMM is the only emulator that really does what the 3270 data stream tells it to do. I'll leave the philosophical discussion of whether that is good or not to others, but it was the opinion of pcomm developers I've known that 3270 emulators should accurately emulate the 3270 protocol. |

Semigeezer, as you say "should". Only the newer versions of PCCOMM have resolved some of the wrong handling of attribute bytes (as compared to 3279 hardware). I am using a newer PCCOMM without the previous problems. |
