Just a note to let everyone know I'll be retiring at the end of this month (5/31/2012). I've been with IBM for 43+ years (plus a couple of summers in college) and I've enjoyed my career immensely. I've especially enjoyed being able to help people use the DFSORT/ICETOOL functions I developed, over many years, in new and interesting ways.

Once I retire, I won't be posting solutions any more since I won't have access to a mainframe to test them, and I don't like posting untested solutions. I may lurk a bit or I may not.

I'm looking forward to retirement, but I'll also miss this board. I'm happy to say that others on the DFSORT Team will continue to contribute.

Thanks to everyone for giving me the chance to earn a living all these years doing something that was a lot of fun for me.

Long live the mainframe, IBM, z/OS, DFSORT and ICETOOL!

Well, thank you Frank Yaeger for your vast contributions to this and other boards. You played a model roll in the forums with your professional attitude, model helpfulness, and turning requests and problems into solutions in DFSORT. The forums are losing one of their best!
I wish you a great retirement and that you will enjoy the new won time for relationships and just spending time in the area where you live (my daughter is now living in Berkely). Ever been to Bryce canyon? I also will be retiring at the end of the year.

Frank, it's been great working with you here and learning from you. I wish you the best in your retirement.

Maybe you should see if IBM would spring for a copy of Rational Developer & Test Environment (formerly RDz UT) as a parting gift for you so you can have that legit mainframe environment we all know you so desperately want in in retirement (ok, really that WE so desperately want you to have, because really... only 43 years?) Smile

Frank,

What can I say.. 8 or 10 years, spending my time reading your answers with the same interest, giving me a great pleasure to test and learn your solutions and the new features... Archiving so many tricky cases in my dfsort pds... Proud to be a addict dfsort gamer.

Sincerely

Best wishes for your retirement.
Having left IBM a couple of years ago I wonder how I ever found time to work and have no desire to return.

Hi Frank,
I will be missing you.

Had it not been for you (and also semigeezer, whom I met couple of months ago), your patience and your kindness, I would probably not have gained enough confidence to get here.

Thanks a lot for all your help !

I was hired as a programmer by IBM as a summer student (intern) in 1967 (in Manhattan) and again in 1968 (in Fishkill, NY). Then I was hired permanently as a programmer by IBM in 1969 in San Jose, CA. My degree was a BENE (Bachelor of Enginering in Nuclear Engineering) from NYU, but you didn't need a computer science degree to be hired as a programmer in those days.

I don't remember my first salary, but it seemed like a lot of money for a kid from Brooklyn. And I was absolutely thrilled to be in California (I still love it here).
