Hi
I've a requirement. Please suggest me a best way to achive this.
My requirement is..I've to replace the field name and field length in copybooks/programs. And need to compile the impacted programs. Can we achieve this using REXX program. Do we have any existing tools for this in place? Do we have any tools to do impact analysis..i.e., to find out what are all the programs/copybooks impacted. Can we write it using REXX.
Please suggest.
Thanks & Regards

This is not a trvial project and can only be analysed in your shop. Many factors are involved. For example, where are your copy books located, where are your programs located (in a vendor product, on PC, on mainframe disk), do your programs have clear indication that they are using copy books, are the copy book names easy to identify, .......... |

There are a number of vendor products for this task (including from IBM). Whether it is cost-effective to install such a product obviously depends on how many programs are involved. |

This smacks of the Y2K problem all over again. Do you have some form of repository that tells you which programs use which copybooks ? Are you 100% certain that someone somewhere hasn't written some code with an "extract" of the copybook with the offending fields etc etc.
All in all - not a trivial job. _________________ Michael |

I'm not sure why do you use such a subject title - is not it about regular "impact analysis" in IT, rather?
Do you use some version-control-tool at your shop? Should not that suffice for you in this? _________________ Regards,

There are several products (Code Accellerator is only one of them) that literally "sling" code for the Win-Based world. I recall Code Rush as well. These are not the same as the version control products in use on the mainframe.
These products also integrate with Visual Studio and if your organization is creating the presentation layer on multiple platforms, might be of interest.
My limited awareness is because 5 years ago or so, a friend at the office was big-time into Windows development and really enjoyed showing me the new stuff as he discovered it. _________________ All the best,
