Actually I want to download some mainframe files in .txt format through rexx. Every day i have to do same thing. Is there any automation idea for this instance? Please supply some code.

Using REXX alone? No. However, REXX, as in other languages, can call other programs and services. What programs/services/utilities do you use to perform this task? What type of server are you transferring files to? What type of processes/services does it require? What type of networking protocol is in use for this process? Do you have to navigate through firewalls? Does the data or transfer process need to be encrypted for security reasons? Does the data requires EBCDIC-to-ASCII translation? What are the rules necessary to accomplish this?

As you can tell, you've left out WAY too many details to even start guessing on an automation process here.

How are you doing it now? Even file transfer dialogs in emulators provide the ability to transfer multiple files saved in a list. FTP might also be an option as well as the ISPF C/S (option 3.7).

Some shops will allow the coding of FTP commands within REXX to download files. The problem with this is that FTP usually asks for a user's userid and password, so there are security problems with that.

Another method of doing this would be to set up batch JCL which performs and FTP and substitute the mainframe file name and .txt file in the JCL using the REXX program and executing a "SUBMIT" on the JCL.
