There are probably many answers to "Why is COBOL used in mainframes" but the one that comes to mind immediately for me is that COBOL was one of the few languages in existence since the late 50s when mainframes were also in their infancy. Many languages have come and gone since then. Also, remember what the acronym stands for: (CO)mmon (B)usiness (O)riented (L)anguage. _________________ ....Terry |

Thanks Terry for the information! So your answer leads me to put forth another question.
So now, mainframe supports only cobol? or other programming languages are also used? |

Mainframes support most languages:
Assembler
C
C++
COBOL
PL/1
Rexx
Java
are the main ones plus the specialist ones:
JCL
SQL
DL/1
etc _________________ Utility and Program control cards are NOT, repeat NOT, JCL. |
