Is it possible to do(replacing a string in recprds) with using sort? please advise.

Yes it is possible, but with certain limitations. You need to use the CHANGE sub-parameter of the OUTREC statement to do this.

If you have the Dec, 2004 DFSORT PTF then you can try the OVERLAY feature. This is more powerful than the traditional CHANGE operator and doesn't have the limitations that I mentioned.
