For calculatin the exact length of Varchar varible, you can do like below

EXEC SQL
SET :WS-LEN-var-char = LENGTH(STRIP(:varchar))
END-EXEC.

05 WS-LEN-VAR-CHAR PIC S9(4) COMP.
