The bottom line is that if you want to map a COBOL record with an assembler DSECT then you have to either use filler bytes or the SYNCHRONIZED clause. Almost all hardware processes ordinal types more efficiently if they aligned on their natural boundary. COBOL was not designed to work this way because in 1960 storage was scarce. Modern languages always boundary align fields unless you specify you want to pack them. _________________ Dave Crayford |
