We have approximately 20000 JCL jobs running in production and there is a requirement to understand and document functionality of each of this job. Manually doing this is a gigantic task. Can anyone suggest a tool based approach for this?

You can use SEEC or RELATIVITY tool for the same.

SEEC is used to analyse COBOL pgms and not JCLs AFAIK.

Do you have comments (After the job card) illustrating the functionality of each job?

If yes, then we can think of stripping those comments in the JCL and appending into a single file and then FTP the file into a text document. This can be done thru REXX.

Vivek,

You are assuming that the comments are correct and up to date.
That is not necessarily trus.
To be sure you have to look at each Job.
And that returns you to the original question.

I don't know either product mentioned, so i can't comment on those.

If you have a job diagram of the jobs, then you can get the info from there.
