What is the difference between PDS and PDSE ?
Is PDSE the 'Library' (BDAM dataset) ?
Please enlighten.

Briefly, PDS is the old format (around for 40 years or so), PDSE (E=enhanced) is the new format (less than 10 years).
PDS has fixed size directory, specified at creation time, so you had to guess up front how many members you intended to add. PDSE has a open-ended directory.
PDS never reused space with the file, so you periodically had to comprss the PDS to recover the lost space due to member updates. PDSE dynamically manages the space.
When used as a program library, PDSE offers enhancements over PDS. _________________ Bruce A. Black
