sejjobs,
Integrated Catalog Facility is a facility by which VSAM data set volume-related fields are separated from the catalog and maintained in the VVDS on the volume on which the data set resides.
catalog is a a directory of files and libraries, with reference to their locations. The collection of all data set indexes that are used by the control program to locate a volume containing a specific data set.
Hope this helps...
Cheers

Every system has a MASTER catalog where certain system dataset (eg. SYS1.LINKLIB) entries must be found. To reduce update activity in the master catalog, one or more USER catalogs are created. Datasets are directed to a user catalog based on the high-level qualifiers of the dataset name (eg. BOB ). An ALIAS entry in the master catalog for "BOB" relates to the actual user catalog name. |
