I am getting the above error when linking from batch program to online,
I am not sure why I am getting it and have checked up on the resp code.

The only way is as follows.
Create in working storage:
01 CPYBK-STE-NAME PIC X(01).
88 CPYBK-STE-C VALUE 'D'.
Procedure Division.
Move CPYBK-STATE-NAME to CPYBK-STE-NAM ... |

Yep dbzTHEdinosauer is correct,
Also you can add in the ALL verb,
INSPECT A1 Tallying WS-CNT for ALL "A", "C", "X".
